Inertia Enterprises raised $450 million to build an ultra-powerful laser system aimed at commercial fusion. The company is building on work at the National Ignition Facility, where scientists achieved scientific breakeven for the first time.
- Its approach uses inertial confinement fusion, in which thousands of lasers compress tiny fuel pellets until atoms fuse and release energy. Inertia plans to mass-produce low-cost pellets and deploy roughly 1,000 lasers per plant.
