US to plant 1 billion trees as climate change kills forests

Matthew Brown of AP News reports that the U.S. will plant 1 billion trees.

The C3 Take
  • In the wake of devastating wildfires, the Biden administration has announced that the U.S. will plant 1 billion trees.
  • The U.S. Forest Service will increase tree plantings to 400,000 acres annually, up from the 60,000 acres that were planted in 2021.
  • The federal government can accelerate tree plantings by collaborating with private property owners and tribes in conservation efforts.
  • Reducing barriers for active forest management practices like tree thinning and prescribed burns will also decrease the intensity and damage of future wildfires.

“Many forests regenerate naturally after fires, but if the blazes get too intense they can leave behind barren landscapes that linger for decades before trees come back.”
