Harun Asad reports for Energy + Environment Leader on Southern Company’s partnership to develop hydrogen fuel from waste.
- Southern Company Gas has begun a partnership with Electro-Active Technologies, T2M Global, and the Department of Energy to transform food waste into clean hydrogen fuel.
- Globally, food waste is a major contributor of methane, a greenhouse gas that is far more potent than carbon dioxide.
- By lessening harmful food waste and producing clean hydrogen, this partnership can make significant strides in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“The DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy awarded Southern Company Gas $1 million for the project, which seeks to use food waste from landfills to generate power, thereby diverting large volumes of food waste from landfills and reducing GHG emissions at the same time.”
