Republican and Democrat join forces to break US reliance on China for critical materials

Abby Smith of The Washington Examiner reports that a bipartisan bill has been introduced to break America’s reliance on China for critical minerals.

  • Texas Reps. Lance Gooden, a Republican, and Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat, have introduced legislation to bolster our domestic supply of critical minerals.
  • Critical minerals are vital for the production of renewable energy sources and military equipment.
  • The legislation would create tax incentives for domestic mining and recycling of critical minerals and establish a grant program in the Department of Interior to produce critical minerals.

“The bill would also create a grant program at the Interior Department to fund pilot projects to produce critical minerals, offering $50 million each year for three years starting in fiscal year 2022, according to the bill text.”
