NPR’s Sam Brasch reports on Denver’s efforts to install the largest sewer-heat recovery in America.
- Denver’s National Western Stock Show and Rodeo will be heated through sewer heat.
- Sewer heat is created by accessing the clean water running through sewer lines and using a heat pump to heat or cool buildings that are above it.
- Using sewer heat provides abundant heating cooling for buildings while reducing carbon emissions.
“At the National Western Center, construction crews have already completed a pit exposing the main sewer line. The wastewater inside stays a mild 55 to 75 degrees year-round, local officials say, no matter the weather outside. That consistent temperature can be tapped to heat and cool aboveground buildings.”
