Google’s carbon emissions surge nearly 50% due to AI energy demand

Katie Bartlett of CNBC reports that Google’s emissions have increased due to AI.

  • In its latest Environmental Report, the tech giant found that its emissions jumped by almost 50% since 2019 and 13% from 2022 to 2023.
  • Total data center electricity consumption also grew by 17% in 2023.

  • Big Tech’s embrace of nuclear power could cut the carbon footprint of AI quickly.

“The company attributed the emissions spike to an increase in data center energy consumption and supply chain emissions driven by rapid advancements in and demand for artificial intelligence. The report noted that the company’s total data center electricity consumption grew 17% in 2023.”
