Designing batteries for easier recycling could avert a looming e-waste crisis

Zheng Chen and Darren H. S. Tan on Tech Xplore explain how designing batteries that are able to be recycled more easily will be beneficial to the environment and avoid a major waste crisis.

Today’s lithium-ion batteries are not designed to be recycled and contain hazardous materials. Other than third-party recycling companies, there is not a real financial incentive to recycle batteries. Unlocking ways to make it easy to recycle these lithium-ion batteries will help us avoid a waste crisis as more and more energy becomes battery powered.

“Creating pathways for battery manufacturers to build sustainable production-to-recycling manufacturing processes that meet both consumer and environmental standards can reduce the likelihood of a battery waste crisis in the coming decade.”
