- Germany’s pro-renewable, anti-everything else (including nuclear) energy push has made the country more dependent on fossil fuels and Russia to meet its energy needs.
- In 2020, 63.7% of Germany’s imported energy came from Russia which led to soaring prices and energy shortages after the invasion of Ukraine.
- And while the country expanded its share of renewables, it shut down its remaining nuclear plants which delivered reliable, carbon-free power to the grid.
- While renewables are important to a diverse, clean energy mix, Germany’s government-centric approach shows the dangers of top-down energy policies.
“If the government wanted to truly help the environment, however, it would look to free enterprise to find solutions and use those resources that are abundantly available—for example, hydropower in the Alpine regions or the rivers.”
