Coal to make up 85% of total U.S. power capacity to be retired in 2022 – EIA

Reuters reports on a new study from the EIA.

  • A new report for the Energy Information Administration (EIA) states that coal will account for 85% of total U.S. power capacity that will be retired in 2022.
  • A recent study found that U.S. emissions increased by 6.2% in 2021 primarily due to increased coal usage driven by high natural gas costs.
  • As more coal retires it is expected that renewables and natural gas will take its place.

“The largest coal power plant scheduled to go out of service in 2022 is the 1,305-megawatt (MW) William H. Zimmer plant in Ohio, the EIA said.”
