Rebecca Falconer of Axios reports on a new UN report that estimates wildfire risk will increase 30% by 2050.
- The UN report called the situation extreme, but “not yet hopeless.”
- In the United States we can reduce wildfires through increased funding for preventative measures, such as proper forest management.
- While mitigation efforts are needed, adaptation must also see an increased role. Policymakers can increase adaptation efforts by reforming housing and insurance practices to accurately reflect fire risk.
“‘Regardless of mitigation … we must learn to live with fire,’ per the report. ‘We must learn to better manage and mitigate the risk of wildfires to human health and livelihoods, biodiversity, and the global climate.'”
