West Warms to Geothermal Energy as a Path to Clean Power Goals

Alex Brown of Stateline reports on western states’ efforts to advance geothermal power.

The C3 Take
  • Colorado Governor Jared Polis is launching an initiative with governors of western states to advance geothermal power in the region.
  • Geothermal generates readily available and safe carbon-free power with a smaller footprint that other renewable energy sources.
  • To advance the energy source, Colorado is considering reducing permitting timelines for geothermal in the state and working with industry leaders and utilities to increase its share of generation.

“Geothermal plants provide a steady, on-demand source of electricity, known as dispatchable generation. They pump steam or hot water from wells hundreds or thousands of feet underground to power turbines. Some leaders think such projects will complement wind and solar farms, whose production can vary based on weather conditions or the time of day.”
