Walmart reaches halfway to Project Gigaton

Jesse Klein of GreenBiz reports on Walmart’s emissions reduction achievements.

The C3 Take
  • Walmart’s sustainability pledge, Project Gigaton, aims to reduce or avoid 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gasses from the company’s supply chain by 2030.
  • A gigaton of greenhouse gas accounts for roughly 30 percent of Walmart’s Scope 3 emissions.
  • Walmart has achieved half of Project Gigaton’s goal and has partnered with 70% of its supply chain to reduce emissions.
  • Private sector leadership is creating a cleaner planet.

“In 2020 and 2021, Walmart avoided or reduced 230 million metric tons and 416 metric tons of carbon emissions since 2017 before reaching the 574 million cumulative this year. And the 4,500 suppliers represent 70 percent of Walmart’s U.S. product sales.”
