US dependence on China for rare earth minerals is a disaster waiting to happen

Chris Barnard writes on The Hill that America’s dependence on China for rare earth materials is a disaster waiting to happen.

The C3 Take
  • China supplies 80% of America’s rare earth materials.
  • The United States must end its dependence on China for its rare earth minerals.
  • In order to power renewable energy and EV charging stations, critical minerals are required.
  • The United States can strengthen our supply chain by streamlining the permitting process for mining.

“The rare earth industry is also crucial to the United States’ clean energy future. As Manish Negam, an analyst at Credit Suisse, emphasizes clean technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines, as well as electric vehicles, would be the worst hit by any supply chain disruptions. If the U.S. is serious about transitioning to a low-carbon economy, as it should be, then we must realize that doing so without a reliable supply chain of rare earth minerals is literally impossible.”
