Last week, the Senate voted to confirm former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as Secretary of the Interior. As Secretary and expected chair of the soon-to-be-established National Energy Council, Burgum has promised to follow President Trump’s directive to increase oil and gas production. But, if Burgum’s unique record is any indication, his approach might also involve carbon capture, a clean technology that can increase oil production and support liquid fuel prices. By prioritizing innovation and streamlining regulation, unleashing carbon capture across the country will make American energy more competitive than ever.
Contrary to critics who label Burgum a “climate skeptic,” he put North Dakota on track to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, more ambitious than California. And unlike California, he didn’t resort to electric vehicle mandates — Burgum’s plan is based on individuals and businesses opting into market opportunities. In addition to land stewardship, the approach strongly relies on carbon capture, utilization, and storage in a way that makes American energy and agriculture stronger.
