Amit Katwala on Wired investigates the negative environmental impact of lithium batteries.
- Lithium batteries power daily technology including cell phones and electric vehicles.
- In order to extract the materials required for batteries, significant environmental damage such as river pollution and damaged soil often occurs.
- As the world becomes more dependent on batteries, we must find safer methods of extraction as well as more environmentally-friendly materials to power our technologies.
“In a recent paper in the journal Nature, Yushin and his co-authors argued that new battery technology needs to be developed that uses more common, and environmentally friendly materials to make batteries. Researchers are working on new battery chemistries that replace cobalt and lithium with more common and less toxic materials.”
