Bloomberg’s Alessandro Speciale and Levin Stamm report that Switzerland is planning to lift its ban on nuclear power.
- The Swiss government is planning to lift its moratorium on new nuclear power plants which has been in place since 2018.
- The country has four operable reactors which generate 37% of its electricity supply and is heavily reliant on renewables (primarily hydropower) for the rest of its electricity needs.
- The Swiss ban on nuclear was originally proposed in response to Fukushima but it may be lifted as the country struggles to meet its net zero goals affordably or reliably.
“The Swiss ban on nuclear plants was originally introduced in 2018, following safety worries that had been triggered by an accident at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan in 2011. But such concerns have recently been overshadowed by Switzerland’s decision to reach net zero by 2050, as well as questions about the country’s ability to secure enough energy supply in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”
