Sponsor an ocean? Tiny island nation of Niue has a novel plan to protect its slice of the Pacific

Nick Perry of the Associated Press writes on Niue’s plan to protect its ocean.

The C3 Take
  • With a population of only 1,700 people, the tiny Pacific island of Niue is especially susceptible to the impacts of climate change and overfishing.
  • Under this plan Niue will allow companies, trusts, groups, and individuals to sponsor 250 acre plots of ocean along Niue over a period of 20 years for $148.
  • The nation is hoping to raise $18 million from this scheme which it will use to protect the conserved areas from threats of illegal fishing and plastic pollution.

“Niue will buy 1,700 sponsorship units, representing one for each of its citizens. Other launch donors include philanthropist Lyna Lam and her husband Chris Larsen, who co-founded blockchain company Ripple, and U.S.-based nonprofit Conservation International, which helped set up some technical aspects of the scheme.”
