- With a population of only 1,700 people, the tiny Pacific island of Niue is especially susceptible to the impacts of climate change and overfishing.
- Under this plan Niue will allow companies, trusts, groups, and individuals to sponsor 250 acre plots of ocean along Niue over a period of 20 years for $148.
- The nation is hoping to raise $18 million from this scheme which it will use to protect the conserved areas from threats of illegal fishing and plastic pollution.
