Rolls-Royce wins pioneering deal to build mini nuclear plants in Czech Republic

Sylvia Pfeifer and Rachel Millard of The Financial Times report that Rolls-Royce has been selected to build an SMR in the Czech Republic.

The C3 Take
  • Rolls-Royce has been selected as the preferred supplier to build small modular reactors (SMRs) in the Czech Republic, beating six other competitors in a deal with state utility ČEZ Group.
  • The first reactor is planned near the South Bohemian Temelín nuclear power plant, and is likely to be built in the mid-2030s.
  • Rolls-Royce is also competing in a UK government competition to build SMRs domestically, with a decision on advancing candidates expected by the end of the month.

“Rolls-Royce is on course to secure the first order from a European government to build a fleet of mini nuclear reactors after being selected as the preferred supplier in a competition overseen by the Czech government.”
