On Election Day, the American people gave the Republican Party a mandate to chart a new path forward on complex issues facing our country, not the least of which is energy. The good news, though, is we don’t have to wait until January to make progress.
Passing legislation on permitting reform before the end of the 118th Congress will not only deliver a win for American energy but will clear the desk for further permitting reform to take place in a new Congress and Administration.
Current proposals in Congress are the next step in unleashing abundant, clean American energy. The Senate’s Energy Permitting Reform Act would address permitting challenges facing energy, mining, and transmission projects – all critical to securing American energy dominance and lowering emissions. In the House, a proposal from Representative Bruce Westerman would modernize the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to ensure we make sound environmental decisions without unnecessarily holding us back from an affordable, more reliable, and cleaner energy future. It would also make necessary changes to judicial review to minimize frivolous litigation that threatens American energy buildout. With the sponsors of both of these proposals now collaborating as we move into the lame-duck session, permitting progress before the end of the year looks increasingly possible.
