Over 100 global leaders pledge to end deforestation by 2030

Jake Spring and Simon Jessop of Reuters report that 100 global leaders have pledged to end deforestation by 2030.

The C3 Take
  • Some of the countries that signed on to the agreement were Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which collectively account for 85% of the world’s forests.
  • The agreement will include some $19 billion in public and private funding to invest in reforestation efforts.
  • Trees are vital to forest ecosystem health and absorb nearly 1/3 of global GHG emissions annually.

“The world lost 258,000 sq km (99,600 sq miles) of forest in 2020, according to WRI’s deforestation tracking initiative Global Forest Watch. That is an area larger than the United Kingdom.”
