NRC approves TerraPower construction permit

  • The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved TerraPower’s construction permit for the Natrium reactor at Kemmerer, Wyoming, marking the first approval of a commercial non–light water reactor in over 40 years. The project, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, clears a major regulatory hurdle and positions TerraPower to begin construction soon.
  • Completing a complex advanced reactor licensing review significantly ahead of schedule reflects improvements in the efficiency of the NRC’s review process while maintaining the agency’s rigorous safety and environmental standards,” said Adam Stein, director of nuclear energy innovation at the Breakthrough Institute.
