Benji Backer writes in The Washington Examiner that activists are standing in the way of addressing climate change.
- “Not in My Backyard” or NIMBY environmentalists are those who support climate action in theory, but oppose clean energy projects when they come to their community.
- The latest example of this is in Amherst, MA where a group of activists led by the Sunrise Movement are blocking the deployment of solar energy.
- In the past NIMBY activists have used excessive litigation and regulation to block or delay hydropower and nuclear energy projects.
- In order to truly reduce to impacts of climate change we must put environmental action over environmental activism.
“The simple fact is that we cannot afford to lead with fear and uncertainty in the face of climate change. We know that all sources of energy have trade-offs, and we must consider them. But, these trade-offs should not stop us from deploying clean energy and certainly should not encourage any sort of moratoriums on clean energy projects.”
