Nigeria’s First Industrial Biochar Site Targets 40,000 Tonnes CO₂ Removal by 2030

A Nigerian climate-tech startup has launched the country’s first industrial-scale biochar production site, aimed at removing 40,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030. Located in Iwuru, Cross River State, the facility represents a major step in aligning Africa’s agricultural potential with the global push for scalable carbon removal. The company behind the project, Releaf Earth, plans to more than double that carbon removal impact through additional sites already in development.

The C3 Take
  • Releaf Earth’s integration of biochar into existing food processing infrastructure is a great example of market-driven technological innovation that cuts costs and emissions.
  • But the impact goes beyond carbon removal and cost reduction. Biochar improves soil health, boosts yields, reduces fertilizer dependency, and helps farmers unlock new income through carbon credits.
  • Private investment and local innovation are driving real, scalable climate solutions in Nigeria, offering a blueprint for global environmental solutions.
