Niina H. Farah of E&E News reports that a judge has overturned Biden’s LNG export pause.
- In January, the Biden administration issued a pause on future LNG exports.
- While this only applied to future projects, the pause impacted relationships with allies and forced many countries in Europe to turn to other countries for LNG (LNG produced in these countries is higher emitting than U.S. natural gas).
- While a good first step, an appellate court could still overturn this ruling.
- Reversing this pause is good for the economy, environment, and energy security of our allies.
“In January, the administration halted reviews of new LNG export applications to non-free-trade-agreement countries, saying it needed to review how to account for climate risks of projects before approving exports. The pause was praised by environmentalists who had been critical of President Biden’s record on fossil fuels. Monday’s court ruling does not force DOE to now approve LNG applications, but it does require the department to restart the process of considering them.”
