JB Straubel Has a Fix for the Battery Problem

  • Tesla co-founder JB Straubel has started a new venture called Redwood Materials.
  • Redwood processes, recycles, and repurposes old batteries that can then be used for clean energy projects and electric vehicles.
  • In its first year Redwood Materials processed over 10,000 pounds of materials from old electronics and batteries.
  • Private sector innovators such as Straubel are leading the way to a cleaner future.

“Straubel’s day job has attracted a lot of attention: he’s trying to head off a looming shortage of materials that the world needs to transition away from fossil fuels. Institutional investors last year signed over $775 million for his new venture, Redwood Materials, and in April the U.S. Senate called Straubel to give expert testimony on resources needed for the energy transition.”
