Japan considering development of new nuclear reactors

Mari Yamaguchi of AP News reports that Japan is considering developing new nuclear reactors.

  • Nuclear energy in Japan has faced public scrutiny following the Fukushima meltdown in 2011, but this announcement could increase the country’s nuclear power generation.
  • Japan has set net-zero by 2050 goals, a feat that will be easier to accomplish with carbon-free nuclear energy.
  • The country is expected to invest in next generation technologies such as small modular reactors.

 

“Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday instructed his government to consider developing safer, smaller nuclear reactors, signaling a renewed emphasis on nuclear energy years after many of the country’s plants were shut down.”
