In a US first, California will pilot solar-panel canopies over canals

Michelle Lewis writes in Electrek about California’s plan to put solar panel canopies over canals.

  • Project Nexus is a $20 million project funded by the State of California that will place solar panels above canals.
  • Experts estimate that if all of California’s canals were covered in solar panels, 13 gigawatts of renewable power would be generated which would be enough to power 9.75 million households.
  • These panels would have the added bonus of shading the canals and lessening water evaporation.

“India already has solar panels over canals, but the mile-long Project Nexus in California’s San Joaquin Valley will be the first of its kind in the US.”
