- Many governments hoped that China joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001 would bring democracy and economic freedom to the nation. Instead, China’s communist government has become more authoritarian and corrupt.
- China’s lack of economic freedom is one reason why the nation is the world’s largest polluter and emits more carbon dioxide than the rest of the developed world combined.
- To counteract China’s environmental degradation and abuse of its citizens, the United States should export economic freedom to the rest of the world through innovation, free trade, open markets and bilateral actions.
“So, 20 years on – the world transformed by a little-noticed decision. It’s been a huge success for China. The intended geopolitical strategy of the West failed. Indeed, rather than China becoming more like the West politically, as a result of this decision, the West economically speaking is becoming a bit more like China.”
