How the US Power Grid Became a Mess—Just When We Need It Most

  • With increasing demand and power plant shut downs, regulators are becoming worried about the state of the gird.
  • Old and outdated infrastructure is playing a role in this, as the average age of large power transformers is 40 years.
  • Inefficient permitting is also making the grid less reliable as developers are unable to build new transmission affordably or on time.

“Indeed, new transmission lines and renewable projects are facing growing opposition from people who don’t want them in their proverbial backyard. The International Energy Agency said in a 2023 report that the US was among the places with the strongest barriers to grid development ‘that relate to public acceptance of new projects.'”
