Mark Hillsdon of Reuters reports on how AI is bolstering the fight against wildfires.
- Wildfires are impacting nearly every corner of the globe and in 2022 they cost the U.S. economy $893 billion.
- Tech companies are creating solutions to track wildfires and address them before they become unmanageable.
- One company is Pano AI, which uses a network of mountaintop cameras that allow the company to actively detect and pinpoint the ignition points of fire in real time.
- Meanwhile, Munich-based OroraTech uses low Earth orbit satellites equipped with infrared sensors that searches for heat being emitted as radiation.
“Other firetech startups include Overstory, which is using AI to work with utility companies to analyse satellite data and identify wildfire risk from vegetation growing near power lines. California-based Rain is working with fire agencies to use autonomous drones that use sensors to identify fires before they rage out of control. Software and thermal cameras also allow them to fight the fires from the air.”
