Green battery backed by billionaires Gates, Bezos and Branson plans factory to ‘reshape energy system’

Andrew Lee of Recharge reports on Form Energy, which has been backed by Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Jeff Bezos.

The C3 Take
  • Form Energy uses novel technology that takes in oxygen and converts iron to rust to charge and discharge batteries.
  • Form claims that its batteries are able to reliably store and discharge power for 100 hours straight at a rate that is cost competitive with legacy power plants.
  • The company will build a $760 million plant in Weirton, West Virginia that will be able to produce batteries starting in 2024.

Recharge reported in 2020 that Minnesota-based utility Great River Energy was planning to build a 1MW/150MWh grid-connected demonstration storage plant using Form Energy’s secret battery technology – providing 1MW of output for 150 hours straight – as it closes all but one of its fossil-fuel power plants.”
