Clive Cookson of The Financial Times reports on underground hydrogen.
- The world has as much as 5 tons of hydrogen in underground reserves, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
- Most hydrogen is produced with natural gas (blue hydrogen) which emits carbon dioxide when burned.
- Experts believe that underground hydrogen can be accessed at a lower cost than green (produced with renewables) and blue hydrogen and with fewer emissions.
- Startups and investors are flooding the industry, which could set up off a hydrogen gold rush.
“Geologists are now finding natural hydrogen reserves around the world. This month researchers reported that more than 200 tonnes of hydrogen a year were flowing from the Bulqizë chromite mine in Albania.”
