Xcimer Energy plans to select a site by the end of the year for what it says would be the world’s largest laser, a key step in its effort to make fusion energy commercially viable.

The company is weighing locations across several states as it joins other fusion firms pressing Washington for major federal investment, warning that global competitors are moving quickly to catch up to the U.S.
