Phred Dvorak of The Wall Street Journal reports that Enel will build a massive solar panel factory in the U.S.
- The Italian utility company says that the planned factory will initially produce 3 gigawatts of solar panels, eventually ramping up to 6 gigawatts.
- The facility will produce solar cells, a key part of the solar supply chain that doesn’t exist in the United States.
- Although the location and cost of the facility hasn’t been announced, experts believe that the facility will cost more than $600 million.
“The factory will also manufacture solar cells, the building blocks for solar panels and a component not currently produced in the U.S., after the last few manufacturers went out of business or were priced out of the market by cheaper imports in recent years.”
