Drought-stricken Arizona moves to curb groundwater use in more rural areas

  • Governor Katie Hobbs is moving to regulate groundwater use in western Arizona by designating a new active management area and requiring water users to track their usage and conserve supplies as aquifers continue to decline.

  • The decision targets large agricultural pumpers as well as local users and has reignited political tensions over water rights, rural economies, and how aggressively the state should intervene as drought and land subsidence worsen.
