Dominion Energy plans to deploy small modular nuclear reactors statewide by 2032

Markus Schmidt of The Cardinal News reports that Dominion Energy will deploy small modular nuclear reactors in Virginia by 2032.

The C3 Take
  • Dominion Energy has not stated where they plan to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs), but they have hinted that the first of their SMRs will likely be located in Southwest Virginia.
  • The company has also begun to research hydroelectric power and storage to expand its clean energy portfolio.
  • While Dominion has already been voluntarily investing in clean power the Youngkin administration’s “all of the above” approach has given the company regulatory certainty to pursue SMR technology.
  • Technology-neutral energy policies which allow markets to pick energy winners and losers spurs innovation and private sector leadership.

“Youngkin also announced that $5 million of this funding would advance the goal laid out in the recently released ‘all-of-the-above’ Virginia Energy Plan, to grow Virginia’s nuclear energy industry by establishing a Virginia Nuclear Innovation Hub. These funds would include grants for higher education institutions to study SMR technology, funding for nuclear workforce development, and additional money for SMR site exploration, including in Southwest Virginia.
