Zheng Chen and Darren H. S. Tan on Tech Xplore explain how designing batteries that are able to be recycled more easily will be beneficial to the environment and avoid a major waste crisis.
Today’s lithium-ion batteries are not designed to be recycled and contain hazardous materials. Other than third-party recycling companies, there is not a real financial incentive to recycle batteries. Unlocking ways to make it easy to recycle these lithium-ion batteries will help us avoid a waste crisis as more and more energy becomes battery powered.
“Creating pathways for battery manufacturers to build sustainable production-to-recycling manufacturing processes that meet both consumer and environmental standards can reduce the likelihood of a battery waste crisis in the coming decade.”
