Amrith Ramkumar of The Wall Street Journal reports that, for the first time, Climeworks has removed atmospheric carbon with direct air capture.
- Climeworks uses large devices containing fans to trap CO2 on sponge-like filters.
- Once the filters are full, carbon dioxide is mineralized and pumped underground into stone storage for thousands of years.
- Companies such as Microsoft and Stripe buy carbon credits from Climeworks to offset their operational emissions.
- This is an important breakthrough for reducing emissions and advancing energy innovation.
“Companies pay a premium, sometimes 100 times more than basic credits, for the credits from Climeworks because there is more certainty they remove carbon from the atmosphere. The companies are also willing to pay more to help jump-start the industry, hoping that costs decline rapidly.”
