China makes no shift away from coal in five-year plan as it ‘crawls’ to carbon neutrality

Chloé Farand of Climate Home News writes that China’s five year climate plan makes no shifts away from coal-fired powered plants.

  • China, who has announced carbon neutrality goals by mid-century, has made no shifts away from coal-fired power plants.
  • While carbon, not necessarily coal, is damaging the environment, China’s climate promises contradict their actions.
  • In order to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, America should hold China accountable for its lack of action to reduce its emissions.

“China’s five-year plan is ‘underwhelming and shows little sign of a concerted switch away from a future coal lock-in,’ said Swithin Lui, of NewClimate Institute, and the China lead for Climate Action Tracker.”
