Darrell Proctor of Power reports that TerraPower is set to build its advanced reactor.
- TerraPower has announced that it will begin construction on its Natrium advanced reactor in June.
- Natrium is a 345-MW sodium-cooled fast reactor which can run on spent nuclear fuel.
- The sodium-cooled component also allows the reactor to easily increase or decrease power output to quickly respond to the grid.
- Natrium will be built on the site of a retiring coal plant in Wyoming and is expected to come online by 2030.
“The Natrium reactor, which has been developed by TerraPower along with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, is a bit larger than most SMRs, with a generation capacity of 345 MW. The reactor also includes a molten salt-based energy storage system (ESS). TerraPower has said the ESS could increase the power output to 500 MW for a period of more than five-and-a-half hours if needed.”
