Amazon, Ikea, others commit to zero-carbon shipping by 2040

Arianna Skibell of E&E News reports that Amazon, Ikea, and others have committed to zero-carbon shipping by 2040.

  • Nine companies including Amazon, Ikea, Patagonia, and Unilever have all announced that they will exclusively use zero-carbon shipping by 2040.
  • 90 percent of world trade relies on ocean transportation which accounts for 3% of global emissions.
  • This pledge shows that markets, not mandates, are the best equipped to create a cleaner future.

“The shipping industry as a whole agreed in 2018 to boost energy efficiency in the maritime sector by at least 40 percent over the next decade and halve greenhouse gas emissions by midcentury compared with 2008 levels.”
