A way forward on climate change: Focus on reducing heavy industry’s carbon emissions

Charles Hernick of the Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions (CRES) on USA Today outlines how to decarbonize the heavy industry sector.

The C3 Take
  • The heavy industry sector, which is a major job provider, is a large carbon emitter.
  • American made products have a lower carbon footprint than those from other nations, especially China.
  • Republicans and Democrats should promote policies that promote American manufacturing and empower companies to lower their emissions voluntarily.

“Heavy industry like iron, steel and cement production has an outsized impact on trade, job growth and the environment, which make it an alluring opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Globally, industry accounts for about 19% of direct greenhouse gas emissions — 33% when including indirect emissions, such as those generated by lighting and heating industrial facilities.”
