Exclusive: Gulf state UAE considers a second nuclear power plant

Alexander Cornwell of Reuters reports that the UAE is considering a second nuclear power plant.

The C3 Take
  • The UAE recently opened up Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, a four-reactor plant with a total output of over 5,000 MW.
  • While the UAE is oil-rich, it is seeking to diversify its energy supply to attract foreign investment and improve energy security.
  • The UAE is expecting a substantial increase in electricity demand as its population and industrial base grow.

“The UAE awarded Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) a $20 billion contract in 2009 to design, build and operate four reactors in Abu Dhabi towards the border with Saudi Arabia.”
