- A new titanium melting facility in Ravenswood, West Virginia, will be powered by an innovative solar microgrid, potentially setting a precedent for clean energy use in heavy industry.
- The project, developed by Timet and BHE Renewables (both Berkshire Hathaway companies), will revitalize a former industrial site and create new jobs while demonstrating the viability of renewable energy for large-scale manufacturing.
- When fully operational, the solar-plus-storage system will provide 106 MW of solar power and 50 MW of battery storage, meeting the titanium plant’s energy needs with clean, reliable electricity.
“The project is perhaps the first to directly power a large industrial facility using solar-plus-storage technology. Developers say they hope the setup can serve as a model for future manufacturing plants — especially as the United States ramps up domestic production of electric cars, solar panels, batteries, and the steel, aluminum, and other essential materials used to make them.”
