Why you probably shouldn’t blow up a pipeline

  • Some activists on the left advocate for eco-terrorism, especially against pipelines, but this form of activism ignores the inconvenient truths of energy affordability and reliability in addressing climate change.
  • Global energy demand is set to grow by 50% over the next 25 years, with developing nations leading the way.
  • Meeting this demand will require the use of all energy sources, including natural gas and oil, which the U.S. can produce more cleanly than Russia or OPEC.
  • Limiting domestic energy production will inhibit the world’s ability to develop and address climate change and poverty.

“But the atmosphere does not care about moral responsibility. Through sheer force of numbers, the Indian and Chinese people emit more carbon than American billionaires. Any political strategy for achieving decarbonization must therefore have an answer for how the Global South can industrialize sustainably.”
