Eric Boehm of Reason writes that Biden’s LNG export pause is based on bad math.
- The White House claims that it is pausing LNG exports to address climate change, but this policy will have the opposite effect.
- The rule only pauses exports to countries that do not have free trade agreements with the U.S. which are mostly in the developing world.
- As our Free Economies are Clean Economies report points out, a majority of future emissions will come from emerging economies and the fastest way to bend the pollution curve is by allowing these countries to develop and by providing cleaner fuels (like American LNG).
“It’s telling that the White House and Department of Energy have not even offered answers to those two huge questions about the potential consequences of this decision. If the entire policy is predicated on the importance of slowing global emissions, it’s only fair to expect the federal government to show its work and prove that reducing the growth of American LNG exports actually will reduce global emissions.”
