The Messenger reports that the University of Illinois wants to build a mini reactor.
- The University of Illinois had operated a nuclear reactor on its campus for research purposes for four decades until 1998.
- The university would also operate this reactor for research and development and is considering using a microreactor that use helium gas for cooling instead of water, which may offer additional safety benefits.
- According to the university, the reactor may be up and running by 2028.
“The university has a history with nuclear power: It operated a reactor on the campus for research purposes, for almost four decades until 1998. Now it is exploring a smaller and safer microreactor concept that could be built quickly and relatively cheaply in a factory, rather than a traditional reactor which takes years to construct and costs billions of dollars.”
