Nick Aspinwall of The Washington Post reports on one architect that has found a way to flood-proof homes.
- Yasmeen Lari is a Pakistani architect is turning to nature to build flood and disaster-resistant homes.
- Lari’s structures combine on limestone and mud facades with inner bamboo skeletons and roofs.
- During last year’s devastating flooding, which left one-third of Pakistan underwater and destroyed 2.1 million homes, the thousands of bamboo structures that Lari built survived.
“A crew without much technical knowledge can manufacture and assemble the structures’ eight panels and the interior bamboo beams that support them on-site. Lari designed them so that homeowners can easily make repairsand even additions…If a flood is coming, homeowners can dismantle the structure’s bamboo skeleton from its permanent foundation and move it to higher ground. Bigger buildings, such as community centers, stand on stilts several feet high.”
