Rep. Tim Walberg and Heather Reams of CRES write in Fox News about the challenges with Biden’s electric vehicle strategy.
- The push from progressives to make our vehicle fleet entirely electric is unrealistic for most consumers and dangerous for national security.
- China currently controls 80% of the supply chain for the rare earth minerals that are needed to power EVs and if the U.S. phases out internal combustion engines (ICE) before we can diversify our supply chain, we will become more beholden to China.
- Rather than pushing an ICE phaseout, lawmakers should reduce barriers (i.e. permitting mineral mining in the U.S.) and allow consumers to decide what vehicle they want to drive.
“The bottom line: Electrification is not the silver bullet for reducing transportation emissions. Without greatly expanding our electric infrastructure and bolstering our domestic critical mineral supplies, an EV-only approach will do more to harm the environment than it will to help it, at the expense of consumer choice.”
