US carbon capture pipeline setbacks reflect challenges in climate fight

Leah Douglas of Reuters reports on the challenges of permitting carbon capture projects.

  • Two high profile carbon capture pipeline projects have been halted due to landowner opposition and permitting challenges.
  • Iowa-based Summit Carbon Solutions and Nebraska-based Navigator CO2 Ventures have proposed two projects that would transport as much as 27 million tons of CO2 annually through 3,300 miles of pipelines to permanent underground storage sites.
  • While lawmakers need to reform the permitting process for projects, developers must also further engage with communities to reduce setbacks.

“Clean energy infrastructure projects need to educate communities on risks and benefits, and engage residents early or they risk existential setbacks, said Sanya Carley, co-director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.”
